Saint Luke Parish Council Minutes Oct. 2, 2023, at 6:30pm - Via Zoom
Present: Father Hammond, Brenda Arnold, Linda Bratton, Marcia Durbin, John Fongheiser, Marie Holland, Gordon Hyde, Terry Klopcic, Barb McComb, Sheryl Mickley, Kevin Murphy, Dave Rashley, Don Tidd, Anthony Whalen Amended Minutes: September’s minutes were amended to include that the July minutes were approved by Barb McComb and seconded by Don Tidd Approval of Minutes: After the amendment, the minutes were approved by Dave Rashley and seconded by Marcia Durbin
Education & Youth Group Report: PSR began Wednesday, Sept. 27. We are in the process of setting up a teachers’ meeting for October. Confirmation: The group is on session 9 of 24. Mandatory Mass attendance has begun for the group for the school year. Youth Group: The first session was Sunday, Oct. 1 with a game night and pizza.
Knights of Columbus: Last weekend the Knights did their Adopt-A-Highway event picking up trash along Rt. 62. Friday, Oct. 6, is the March for Life in Columbus. Rather than taking a bus, the participants will carpool. On Sunday, Oct. 8, the Knights will observe Cemetery Sunday beginning with Mass at 4pm. All deceased members will be honored. Following the Mass, there will be a potluck at the Center as well as an awards ceremony. Oct. 13, the Knights will have a fish fry. The Knights will be getting more “Vote No on Issue 1” yard signs.
Parish Council of Catholic Women: The baby shower for Starting Point is going well with nice items being collected. This collection will continue through October. The next PCCW meeting is Sunday, October 15 at 1:30pm in the Center. Ladies will be making Christmas cards from Creative Memories. Community Life: Narcan is now in the Church and the Center. Instructions will be in the bulletin.
Maintenance: The maintenance crew are in the process of putting new siding on the garage. They are also running wires for the security system which will be in place in several weeks. Paperwork needed to begin the tuck pointing of the Church has been completed and turned in to the contractor. Work is also being done at the cemetery straightening headstones.
Finance & Administration / Worship: Next week all priests will be on retreat so there will be no daily Masses that week. We will have Adoration on Tuesday and Wednesday as usual. Father Blubaugh will have surgery on Oct. 10. This coming week, St. Vincent de Paul will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Church which was built in Oct. 1923. The weekend of Oct. 14-15, St. Luke will have a visiting priest to fill in for Fr. Brandimarti.
Social Concerns: Jesus in the Eucharist is beginning this Thursday. Hand sanitizer will be provided as needed.
Respect Life: October is Respect Life Month. On Thursday, Oct. 5, the second annual Dinner for Life will be held in Columbus. Friday, Oct. 6 the Right to Life Rally takes place at the State House followed by the March for Life. On Saturday, Oct. 7, Starting Point will have their Fall Fundraising Event at Sockman Community Park in Fredericktown. It begins at 9am and continues until noon. Please join us as we recite the rosary for the defeat of the abortion amendment before Saturday Mass and after Sunday Mass. We need to unite in prayer and fasting for the defeat of this abortion amendment. Be sure you are registered to vote and vote no on Issue 1. Bereavement: Since the last meeting of Parish Council on September 5, there are no deaths within the parish, but one death with parish connections to report. Harold R. Brown, the Father of Susan (Deacon Tim) Birie, died September 9. A Celebration of Life was held September 14 at Snyder Funeral Home in Fredericktown. A private service will be held at a later date. Please keep Harold’s family in prayer during this difficult time. We expect to mail approximately 130 invitations to the Memorial Gathering this week, with an RSVP date of November 15. We will be working with George Durbin, Dave Rashley, and Bob Blubaugh to honor our Knights of Columbus who have died since 2018, since Kevin Murphy will be unavailable. The updated list of participants for Adoration, including times and contact information, is complete and has been mailed. October is Mass count month. The first date this year is actually September 30. A reminder email has been sent to all ushers.

The key card reader will be installed on the side door of the church, the sacristy door, the kitchen door, and the office door. The maintenance crew have been working on installing the needed wiring. Installation will take several weeks. Communication about the system will be explained once it is completed.
Old Business: a) 2024 Festival Date: Next year’s date for the Festival is Saturday, July 13. Please be sure to save the date so you can help support the Festival. We are currently looking for chairs for next year’s Festival. b) Jesus in the Eucharist: This 7-week program will begin Thursday, Oct. 5 at St. Luke with classes also at St. Vincent. Each program will begin with a video and be followed by discussion. Father Hammond strongly encourages everyone to come and learn more about the wonderful gift of the Holy Eucharist.
New Business: a) Transitional Meetings have begun to meet monthly. Communications are being discussed as the first order of business. The group is also looking at a list of questions from parishioners. b) Honoring Our Vets: Nov. 10 is Veterans Day. Council members discussed how our Church could honor our veterans. Gordon Hyde and Marcia Durbin will work on getting something in place. c) Tree Removal: A large evergreen tree near the Church will be evaluated for possible removal.

We are currently looking for chairs for next year’s Festival. b) Jesus in the Eucharist: This 7-week program will begin Thursday, Oct. 5 at St. Luke with classes also at St. Vincent. Each program will begin with a video and be followed by discussion. Father Hammond strongly encourages everyone to come and learn more about the wonderful gift of the Holy Eucharist.
New Business: a) Transitional Meetings have begun to meet monthly. Communications are being discussed as the first order of business. The group is also looking at a list of questions from parishioners. b) Honoring Our Vets: Nov. 10 is Veterans Day. Council members discussed how our Church could honor our veterans. Gordon Hyde and Marcia Durbin will work on getting something in place. c) Tree Removal: A large evergreen tree near the Church will be evaluated for possible removal.
