Parish Council Minutes October 4, 2021 – 6:30pm – Via Zoom
PRESENT: Father Hammond, Linda Bratton, Marcia Durbin, John Fongheiser, Marie Holland, Barb McComb, Sheryl Mickley, Dave Rashley, Keith Mickley, Marie Mosher, Chris Mehringer-Smith, Frank Meravy EXCUSED: Tammy Harrmann, Ed Gardner, Bill Durbin APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Dave Rashley made a motion to approve the minutes as written. John Fongheiser seconded the motion. Motion was carried.
EDUCATION and YOUTH REPORT: Youth Group – The youth group has begun the Life Teen series, “Misericordia”, A Life Night of Forgiveness and Mercy. This is based on the Corporal and Spiritual Acts of Mercy. There are currently 79% of the Youth at St. Luke attending Youth Group (11 out of 14). Confirmation - Confirmation classes have been ongoing with 4 of 24 sessions completed. There are currently 13 children in attendance. June Mass dates for Confirmation were requested and sent to the Diocese in July. We will need to wait for approval when a new Bishop is installed and the 2022 calendar is set. There will be a parent meeting for Confirmation students on Sunday, October 17 at 7pm in the church. This will follow the 200th Anniversary Mass celebration and Potluck. PSR – PSR classes are occurring with 20 children in attendance for sessions with one family homeschooling due to COVID.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS: On September 26, the Knights continued the Adopt a Highway Program with many volunteers supporting the effort. The first Fish Fry of the fall will occur on October 15 from 5-7pm. It will be a drive thru.The Cemetery Mass will be held on October 16 at the Cemetery (weather permitting).The Knights have begun the Football Fundraiser. See any Knight to purchase tickets. The Knights will begin collecting Coats for Kids soon. All donations will need to be brand new coats, hats, scarves and gloves. The Knights will be contacting local school districts to determine need for donations. The Knights of Columbus are looking into a partnership with the local Legion to further support the community.The Knights of Columbus gave out yearly awards. Recipients included Deb Ridgway – Lady of the Year and Joe Hilberg – Youth of the Year. Congratulations to both parishioners.
PARISH COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN: The PCCW held an evening of painting on September 21. There were reservations for 30 women. The painting was of the church in recognition of our upcoming Anniversary celebration. A Christmas themed painting evening is planned for November 9.
COMMUNITY LIFE: On November 7, there will be a Drive Thru Turkey Dinner. The 200th Anniversary Celebration will still be a potluck with parish members serving the meal. Crucifixes will be blessed and distributed to parishioners at the celebration.
DEANERY: No Meeting since the start of COVID-19.
MAINTENANCE: The garage was pressure washed and the process of pressure washing the rectory has begun. The metal posts to mark the boundaries at the cemetery were painted and set in place. The light over the sacristy door was replaced. The batteries in the Center men’s bathroom were replaced. The choir loft was set up to accommodate a larger number of people. A fallen limb was cut up and the bushes were trimmed. A leaky faucet was repaired in the rectory. The church basement window well cover was also repaired, as was the spouting on the Rectory and the garage.

RESPECT LIFE: October is Respect Life Month. This past Sunday (the first Sunday of the month) was Respect Life Sunday. Our local pro-life organization is Starting Point. On October 2, Starting Point sponsored the Path for Life. Stations were set up along the Kokosing Gap Trail and along the Heart of Ohio Tour. On September 24, the Women’s Health Protection Act was passed in the House. This Act will give the federal government control over abortion. This will eliminate State’s individual laws regarding abortion. You are encouraged to contact our state senators before this is voted on in the Senate.
BEREAVEMENT: Since the last meeting of the Parish Council on September 6, we have two deaths within our parish to report. Robert Sichel, father of Marty (Angie) Sichel, passed away September 21. Calling hours were held at Schoedinger funeral Home in Gahanna. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Philip the Apostle Church in Columbus, with burial at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Angelo Graziani, the husband of Betty, passed away October 1. All services are to be held at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church in Wooster, with burial at Sherwood Memorial Gardens. There is also one non-member death to acknowledge. Michael Boals, the brother of Jennifer (Aaron) Stutz, died September 9. Services were held at Miller Funeral Home, with burial at Coshocton County Memory Gardens. Please remember these families in your prayers during this difficult time. We have once again been blessed with two donations to the ministry, for which we are most grateful. We are excited to welcome Donald Tidd as the newest member of the ministry. Invitations to the Memorial gathering were mailed the last week of September, with an RSVP date of November 1. Surprisingly, we have already begun receiving responses from invitees.
WORSHIP: Bishop Brennan will be here until his new installment in Brooklyn, New York. Work will continue with the planning process for Real Presence, Real Future. There is an Advent Penance Service scheduled at St. Luke on December 15 at 6:30pm. This will coincide with PSR. All parishioners are welcome to attend.
SAFETY: We are about one month away from the Real Presence, Real Future meetings. Fr. Hammond will bring more information cards for St. Luke for parishioners to distribute. There have been some recent issues with static in the mounted speakers on the St. Joseph side of the church. This issue will be looked into. There are plans to put a railing in the hallway leading up to the altar to support individuals who need assistance going up and down stairs.
FINANCE AND ADMINISTRATION: Father reported that he received the 1st Quarter Financial Report. The report showed a slight decline in collections as per what was budgeted. Due to the generosity of the Parish, we are still operating in the black.
OLD BUSINESS: Father Blubaugh picked up the books for the 200th celebration. There were 3 quotes received and sent to the diocese for the new black top in the parking lot. This is on hold for approval until the new Bishop is installed.
NEW BUSINESS: There are 3 council members whose term expires this year. An announcement will be placed in the bulletin in November asking for volunteers to run to replace members leaving. Anyone interested can contact the Parish Office.
