Parish Council Minutes June 5, 2017
Present: Father Hammond, Keith Miller, Don Hawk, John Higgins, Tom Harrmann, Amy Mickley, Eric Morris, Sheryl Mickley, Marcia Durbin, Don Horn, Dave Rashley, Bobbie Thomas and Steve Bratton
Excused: Marie Holland
Approval of Minutes: Correction in May minutes—PCCW report was in Community Life and Community Life in PCCW.
Youth Report: Amy Mickley reported there was no meeting in May. It is summer break. They do have some fun things planned for the summer: June—zip lining; July—water park, August—canoeing. Each participant for the summer fun will have to pay for a portion of the cost. Mission trip could only be done on fair week. They’re not sure that will happen this summer. The youth will help at the festival with games. Amy passed out books for the seniors “100 Things Every
Catholic Teen Should Know” from the Parish, at senior Mass.
Knights of Columbus: Congratulations to the Family of the Month: Kevin and Laura Wills. Kevin and Laura are long time active members of the Parish. They have four children, Addison,
Garren, Kyla and Kelby. In support of the Knight efforts Kevin regularly helps in the kitchen at the pancake breakfasts. Laura's support in her music ministry during Mass is outstanding. She is a self-taught pianist and provides remarkable music at St. Luke Masses. Knight of the month is Angelo Graziani. Angelo is a long time member of St. Luke's and the K of C. He is a fourth degree Knight. Angelo has been active over the years supporting many of the Council and Assembly programs. The annual Measure up fundraiser is one in particular. We would like to thank Angelo for his support and congratulate him as the May Knight of the month.
Congratulations to Don Horn for completing his Fourth Degree Exemplification. Will be working in July on the 2017-2018 calendar and upcoming events. Joined with PCCW and gave out scholarships.
Squires: Participated in the Ohio State Knights of Columbus Convention over Memorial Day weekend. Squires will have their annual State Convention in 3 weeks.
Parish Council of Catholic Women: Held Mother-Daughter banquet on May 7th. 150 women and children were entertained with a style show by LuLa Roe. Big thanks to the K of C for serving. Gave scholarships at the Senior Mass to Vanessa Hawk, Jaret Baker, and Rachel Mickley. PCCW gave Rachel an extra $100, in memory of Caroline Mickley, for going above and beyond in our Parish. Will be meeting to plan the 2017-2018 calendar; any suggestions, contact an officer. Next meeting will be in September.
Deanery Report: May meeting was held at St. Luke’s. Few Priests are attending the meetings although their representatives are. Fr. Wilson decided to not pressure the priests to attend because they are so busy. The Deacons were well represented. Only four parishes will host the meetings in the future. Parishes are to look into various security measures and report back. 150 youth from the catholic schools will be helping the elderly in Newark July 10-15 with whatever they need. Church of Ascension, Johnstown is burning their mortgage after 10 years.
Maintenance: Reported on the estimates for parking lot sealing, including striping. Got an estimate from Edsel’s of $9,000 for expanding side parking lot and $350 for material for the upper lot. Parking lot expansion will not begin until after the festival. Discussed taking down playground and white shed. The diocese wants them gone because of insurance liability. Motioned to have playground set and white shed go to the auction at festival; liability of removal to buyer and have to be out by August 7, 2017. Discussed Fr. Hammond's portable microphone. Will look into getting a new one.
Finance & Administration: Bishop Annual Appeal: We went over goal; now all money comes directly back to our parish. We will continue seeking pledges until the end of June.
Community Life: Held senior brunch. Four seniors and their families attended. Served appetizers for 100 people after Baccalaureate. PSR teachers took Tom Harrmann out for his retirement. The parish had a reception and gave a plaque to Tom Harrmann for his 34 years as Director of Religious Education at St. Luke.
Social Concerns: Reported that there are several drug addiction treatment centers in our community, including KCH New Vision and KSAAT Knox Substance Abuse Action Team.
Education: Tom Harrmann and Sheryl Mickley will be meeting soon.
Worship: Fr. Hammond introduced Deacon Brian who will be with the consortium for the summer. Fr. Vince will leave July 11, 2017. Fr. Dan Olvera will be our new Parochial Vicar.
Safety: Don't get wrapped up in your own life but look around at your surroundings!
Other Business: Projector hardware is in; will be up and running soon. A big thank you to Keith Mickley and Don Horn for all their expertise.
Festival update: Nothing new.
Congratulations and thank you to the Danville Girls Softball team for their great season, and for being a very humble team.
