The Father Lamy Award has been given by the Pastor and People of St. Luke Parish, since 1984, in memory of our first resident Pastor, Father John Baptist Lamy. Each year we ask parishioners to name candidates for this award. Perhaps, if we reflect on Romans 12:3-8 and the character of Father Lamy, the award will make more sense, and you will better be able to identify people of Saint Luke’s for the award.
“Do not think of yourselves more highly than you should. Instead, be modest in your thinking, and each one judge yourself according to the amount of faith that God has given you. We have many parts in one body, and all these parts have different functions. In the same way, though we are many, we are one body in union with Christ and we are all joined to each other as different parts of one body. So we are to use our different gifts in accordance with the grace that God has given us. If our gift is to speak God’s message, we must do it according to the faith that we have. If it is to serve, we must serve. If it is to teach, we must teach. If it is to encourage others, we must do so. Whoever shares what he has with others, must do it generously; whoever has authority, must work hard; whoever shows kindness to others, must do it cheerfully.”
Romans 12:3-8 Father Lamy was an example of the above gifts. He
spoke God’s message, he
served his people with boundless energy and great fortitude. He
taught through his powerfully great presence and priestly zeal. He
encouraged others throughout his entire life in a manner that was deliberate in what he did. He
was patient with the day and had a long view of the future. He
was generous in sharing his time, gift and talents with others.
He spoke and taught with authority. He always stood up for what was right and opposed what was wrong. He held the values of almost two thousand years of faith.
Affirmation was the theme of his life and
kindness abounded from his spiritual commitment. John Henry Newman compared him to St. John Chrysostom because Lamy had intimate
sympathy and compassion for the whole world.
Each and every one of you are gifted in various ways. Reflect on the above Scripture and the spiritual gifts of Father Lamy and nominate people from the parish that you feel through their life are a personal witness to Christ by using their time, gifts, and talents, energy and dedication, at home, in their community, and in the Church.
