Parish Council Minutes Mon. February 6, 2023, at 6:30pm - Via Zoom
Present: Father Hammond, Brenda Arnold, Marcia Durbin, John Fongheiser, Terry Klopcic, Barb McComb, Kevin Murphy, Dave Rashley, Don Tidd Excused: Linda Bratton, Sheryl Mickley, Gordon Hyde and Marie Holland Approval of Minutes: Marcia Durbin made a motion to approve the minutes. Barb McComb seconded the motion.
The Rescue Project: Deacon Tim was a special guest to talk about the Rescue Project which kicked off on Thursday, February 2. He shared his enthusiasm for the turn-out of 65 people and the energy of the evening, which included a nice meal, the viewing of the Fr Ricardo video, and group discussion. People are still able to join in the sessions. Kevin Murphy will work with the parish office to add an announcement in the bulletin regarding still being able to attend even if they were unable to attend the first session.
Education & Youth Report:PSR: Parent Meeting for 2024 Confirmation group is Wednesday, February 15 from 6:30-7:30pm. Letters were distributed or mailed to parents February 1. February 22 is Mass for Ash Wednesday – NO CLASS. Sheryl is working with Fr. Blubaugh (ADAM board) on contacting organizers of Colt Football and Basketball programs that affect 2 through 6 grade to not schedule practice after 6pm on Wednesdays for the 2023-2024 school year. Youth Group: Numbers are down for January which is not unusual for this time of the year. Youth are enjoying the group activities and breakout sessions as well as completing reconciliation and adoration with the current Life Teen series. Sessions for February are February 5 and February 19 from 6-7:30pm.
Knights of Columbus: The Knights collected $369.44 for their support the seminarians. The next fish fry is February 17 and will run through Lent. Parish Council of Catholic Women: The PCCW held a meeting Sunday, January 29, 2023 with Tastefully Simple freezer meals and a cooking/tasting party. The free gifts will be put in baskets for the Valentine's Dinner Dance on Saturday Feb. 11. The next meeting will be March 5 and Sandy Boone will be painting with us. The Women's Conference will be Feb. 18. Marcia Durbin has a ticket she will donate. Community Life: Marriage weekend is Feb. 11 and 12. Roses will be given to all couples married 50 years or more. There was a discussion if we will have the dinner on April 2 for Palm Sunday.
Maintenance: The team has been working on the rewiring of the community center to be able to effectively use the new generator for all purposes, excluding the air conditioner. A variety of kitchen repairs have been completed as well as assisting at the Sanctuary. Center “icicle” lights were rewired and repowered. The church basement door was also repaired. The refrigerator in the Community Center has had issues with temperature control and is in the process of being repaired. If anyone notices a problem, they are to contact Marcia right away. The facia has been installed on the north side of the garage beginning the re-siding of the garage. Stakes were placed to aid snowplow. Placed kneeling pads in front handicapped pews. Weekly routine checks made at the rectory, church, and center. Shoveled sidewalks.
Finance & Administration: Fr Hammond reported that the parish finances remain in good standing and offertory collections continue to be generous and very much appreciated.
Social Concerns: Don Tidd reported that he is not registered to receive notifications from the Diocese regarding Social Concerns updates.
Respect Life: No report.
Bereavement: Since the last meeting of Parish Council on January 3, 2023, there are no deaths within the parish, but two non-members with parish connections to report. Robyn Hayes, the sister of Kathy (Roger) Durbin, died February 1. Ted Vitaro, the brother-in-law of Linda (Charlie) Bratton, Donald (Louise) Blanchard, John (Alice) Blanchard, Sandy (Leonard) Mickley and Ed (Monica) Blanchard, passed away February 2. Services and interment were held Tuesday, February 7 in Wooster. Please continue to keep these families in prayer during this most difficult time. The date for this year’s Memorial Gathering has been changed from the previously scheduled December 8 to Friday, December 1. We continue to receive notes from individuals, thanking us for last year’s gathering, telling us how much it meant to them, which has been quite humbling. Planning for this year’s event will begin in February, after our involvement in the Rescue Project ends. We are thrilled to welcome Dave and Mindy Rashley and Michelle Winings as new members of the Bereavement Ministry. We have received another very generous donation, for which we are most grateful.
Worship: The mission for the entire consortium will be held in the evenings of March 5 through the 8 with alternating dates between St. Vincent and St. Luke. The Stations of the Cross will begin on Friday, February 24 and will continue during Lent. Safety: The safety committee continues to look for viable solutions to lock the side door and are working with Schmidt Security. A few options were discussed with next steps being to clarify process expectations before making a decision. Dave Rashley will report updated findings by the next council meeting.
New Business: a) There was a question of when the exterior of the church was last sealed for appropriate restoration. The maintenance committee will work with Sandy to evaluate and determine plan for timing of the next inspection/sealing/restoration process. b) Charlie and Linda Bratton have been incredible co-chairs for our parish festival these past few years. They are ready to step aside and support the next team of leaders. We thank them for their time and leadership and appreciate their willingness to help in the transition process with new leadership. A bulletin announcement will be placed to find a new chairperson or team so we can allow for adequate planning time. c) The council contact list needs to be reviewed and updated for email, phone and committee by the next meeting.
