Saint Luke Parish Council Minutes September 12, 2016

Meeting called to order: Don Hawk
Approval of Minutes: Motion to approve July minutes as written.
Youth Report: Four Youth leaders attended a training seminar in Cleveland hosted by the LifeTeen staff in late August. There were 12 youth present for the fall kickoff, on August 28. There was food, games, and fun. We began fall quarter on September 11 with 9 students. We started a four week session on the Love of Jesus. We will be meeting the first three Sundays of the month through the school year.
Knights of Columbus: Patriot Day: St. Luke Council 910 and Assembly 2790 wish to recognize and thank our First Responders, Active, and Retired Military, for your service to protect our Freedom. September 11
th was remembered at the 10:00AM Mass by the Fourth Degree Color Guard. Members of the Eastern Knox County Joint Fire District as well as The Danville Police Department attended, were recognized and thanked. Our thanks again to all who have served!
New Officer Installation: On August 15
th the installation of new officers took place. A Mass was celebrated by Father Blubaugh, followed by a pot luck dinner. The event was attended by approximately 50 members, families and parishioners. Our thanks to everyone who attended.
2016 – 2017 Calendar and upcoming events:
Fish Fries: September 16th, October 7th and October 28th, all at 5:00PM.
Pancake Breakfast’s: September 18th, October 9th & 30th, 9:00AM.
Cemetery Mass: October 23rd at the St. Luke Cemetery, 2:00PM.
Membership Drive: November 5th and 6th.
Squires: No report
Parish Council of Catholic Women: Along with the K of C, held a welcoming for new members and people from Utica. We had a great turn out of our parishioners to welcome them. Next meeting is Sunday September 18, 2016 at 5pm with Harvest Auction, starting with covered dish dinner. Respect Life Month will be in October. We will have the play pen for baby items to donate to Starting Point.
Deanery Report: Meeting is tomorrow, September 13, 2016. We talked about minutes from previous meeting with Bishop. It does not look like they can get rid of sports on Sunday, but don’t start till afternoon so people can go to Mass. Another topic that was discussed was making sure the church does not have cliques, making everyone feel welcome.
Maintenance: Removing of asbestos in rectory and church basement has been completed. Several of the Pews have been repaired. Orkin will be here the 15
th and 16
th to work on the bat issue; once completed the understructure work can fully begin. We hope to have work completed two weeks after starting.
Finance & Administration: Thank you for the continued support; this has helped make these needed projects doable.
Community Life: Father Lamy awards are coming up again. We will be having nominations soon; voting will be on October 8 & 9. The winners will then be announced on October 16, 2016.
Social Concerns: In
We Care for our Common Home, Pope Francis is calling for dialogue and an ecological conversation to help shape future. This will take place on Saturday October 8, 2016 from 10am to 2pm at Martin De Porres Center in Columbus. Registration deadline is September 30. Please check with office if you want more details. Once again touched on the drug issues facing the community and the Arms of an Angel Foundation is trying to help battle this. It was mentioned that the St. Vincent de Paul Society from St. Vincent serves all of Knox County.
Education:
Registration packets for the upcoming Parish School or Religion were put in the back of the church three weeks ago for parents to take home read and fill out the required information and to return the papers on the first meeting that will occur on September 14. It is very important that all the information on the registration paper is completely filled out and all the Protecting God’s Children papers are signed.
We began with a teacher meeting on Wed. Sept. 4. There were 10 teachers there. Fr. Hammond was also in attendance. Class lists were passed out. Room assignments were discussed. The calendar for the year was passed out and discussed, so as to avoid any conflicts with other events that will be taking place. Protecting God’s Children forms were passed out, signed and returned.
We will begin the first semester with a Mass celebrated by Fr. Vince at 6:30 on Wed. Sept 14.
Our first full night of class will be Wed. Sept 21. We will have snacks at the beginning of class as we have had in the past. Grades K-10 will meet from 6:30-8:00. The students in grades 11-12 will meet from 7:45-9:15.
We will have safety drills as the school year begins.
Parents are being encouraged to participate in the ALPHA program while they are waiting for their children to attend the PSR classes. The ALPHA program will be held at the Blonde Robin.
Worship: RCIA has started, alternating between St. Luke and St. Vincent. Will have a blessing for the catechists on Catechetical Sunday. The Bishops have decided to have a special collection for the Louisiana flood victims.
Safety: PSR will be doing a safety drill refresher.
New Kitchen Appliances will be installed in Center kitchen sometime in October.
Eucharistic Adoration has been postponed until the work on the church is completed. There are still a few open spots.
