RESPECT LIFE: Bishop Brennan published a statement in the February 14th issue of the Catholic Times. He asked his brother bishops in the United States to join him in speaking out against the current administrations rescinding regulations that were designed to protect the life of the unborn. The current President also overturned the Mexico City and the Promoting Life in Global Health policy, which prohibited U.S. taxpayer dollars from funding abortions overseas. In light of these recent events, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Respect Life Committee is asking parishes to consider publishing an announcement in the bulletin the weekends of April 11, 18, and 25. The announcement is, “Stop your tax dollars from going to abortion.”
BEREAVEMENT: I am happy to report there are no deaths in our parish since council last met in March. Vic Campanelli has been kind enough to add information about the Bereavement Ministry to Flocknotes. To date, approximately 45 people have expressed interest in attending this year’s Memorial Gathering. We are planning a Zoom meeting with members of the Ministry later this month. Because of interest Bishop Brennan had shown in the Bereavement Ministry when we met at a St. Luke Fish Fry shortly after his arrival in the diocese, we communicated with him recently to make certain he knows he is invited to the Memorial Gathering in December. He quite graciously responded with a letter, a portion of which follows: “I would love to visit the parish for your annual event in 2021, however, at this time I cannot commit. There will be an urgency, I suspect, beginning in the fall to reschedule many events we have had to postpone. Please know that if I am not able to make it to Danville, you and the parishioners there will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers.”
WORSHIP: Deacon Tim reported a large crowd in attendance for the Good Friday Service. Easter Sunday also had a nice crowd with overflow in the center.
SAFETY: The Ushers met and decided to reduce the number of ushers needed at weekend Masses. There have been several weeks with streaming without incidents. In the future, in addition to streaming on Facebook live, YouTube may also be added. There are still some issues occurring with the hearing loop. These issues are in the process of being resolved.Sheryl Mickley inquired about the possibility of meeting in person for the monthly Parish Council meetings. Several other council members would like to see this occur if it is deemed safe. Father Hammond will determine if this is possible in the coming months.
FINANCE: Deacon Tim reported that finances remain good due to continued generosity. The parish received a large donation contributing to this generosity. Father Hammond would like to have a Memorial Mass in the future for Jimmy Banbury.
NEW BUSINESS: a) Festival 2021? There will be no festival in June or July. The possibility of a drive-thru dinner was presented in lieu of the festival. A 200th Anniversary Celebration may occur in October of this year, aligning with the Feast Day of St. Luke. b) Compensation for Steve Butcher: Steve Butcher is a non-parishioner who has donated countless hours to assist our parish in the live streaming process. A proposal was made to pay $1000 to Steve as compensation for his time. Marcia Durbin made a motion to approve the amount, and Chris Mehringer-Smith seconded the motion. The motion was carried. c) Slate Roof: Several pieces of the slate roof have come off and or have been broken. An estimate for repair is being sought. d) Parking Lot: The church parking lot will likely need to be paved next year.
